Description:

An American Federal Mahogany Chest of Drawers, c. 1810, attributed to Richard Allison, New York, having a deep drawer with oval veneered panels above graduated long drawers, scalloped skirt and 'French' feet, brasses replaced, height 45.5 in., width 46 in., depth 21.5 in. E1500-2500 Note: The workshop of Richard Allison (1780-1825) flourished between 1806 and 1814, producing high quality wares known for dramatically figured veneers and complicated geometric inlay. Like his more prolific brother, Michael Allison (1773-1855, fl. 1800- 1850), Richard Allison's Vesey Street workshop was not only contemporaneous with Duncan Phyfe's, but also neighbored it. The distinctive shaped apron, centered by an inverted broken arch and flanked by French feet, together with the manner of geometric inlay on the upper drawer of this example can be found on several labeled Richard Allison chests illustrated in Flannery, Margo, 'Richard Allison and the New York City Federal Style', The Magazine Antiques, 1973 pp. 995-1001, fig. 3, 4, 5.
