Lot 129
Description:
An American Federal Mahogany Sofa, c. 1795-1810, New York, the padded backrest and sides above a stuffed seat, the arms finely detailed with water leaves and rosettes, the columnar supports headed by lotus leaves, on square tapered legs, lacking two inside rear legs, height 36 in., width 77.5in., depth 25.5. E3000/5000 Note: Interestingly, the flaring of these rear sofa legs, the pegging, and the early neo- classical design of the carved arms in the Directoire manner denotes the work of a French-trained cabinetmaker, such as Charles Honore Lannuier.
