An American Gothic Carved and Faux Bois Bookcase, c. 1835, Philadelphia or Baltimore, molded cornice, three arched glazed doors, adjustable shelves, the lower section with three arched paneled doors, shelf interior, cove molded base, retains the original surface, height 105 in., width 85 1/2 in., depth 19 1/2 in.

  • Notes: Note: The use of large crisp reed moldings, restrained Gothic arches and quatrefoil appliqués on this cabinet and the two bookcases following are seen in work by a number of Baltimore cabinet makers including John Needles and Henry W. Jenkins (fl. 1838-1878). Reference: An example of Needle's bold reeding appears on a sideboard conserved by the Maryland Historical Society and illustrated in Weidman.
