Description:

An American Gothic Cherrywood Settee, c. 1840, Philadelphia, white pine secondary wood, of architectonic form, height 59 in., length 83 in., depth 25 in. E7000/10000 Note: These settees belong to a small group of high-style seating associated with Philadelphia. The group is documented by a pair of wooden-seated hall armchairs and a pair of backless benches made for the Gothic cottage at Andalusia, Nicholas Biddle's villa north of Philadelphia. Related to the Andalusia set are a pair of walnut side chairs with wooden seats at the Smithsonian Institution's Castle and a matching pair in a private collection. The principal motifs shared by all this furniture include octagonal legs with scalloped brackets, sunkwork panels with cusp ends on the seat rails, and abstract floral finials. Special thanks to Wilmington, DE. scholar, Robert F. Trent. See Katherine S. Howe and David B. Warren, The Gothic Revival Style in America, 1830-1870, exhibition catalogue of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1976, Plates 9 and Plate 52. Also note: James Biddle, of the Cottage at Andalusia, advises that these settees seem to be from the same maker as those at the Cottage. Provenance: Found in a historic New Orleans Masonic Temple.
