Lot 387
An American Inlaid Cherrywood "Folk Art" Chest of Drawers, mid-19th c., rectangular top above a frieze drawer and four graduated drawers, all with "chip carved" molding, flanked by beveled columns surmounted by applied "heart in hand" blocks, distinctive ceramic pulls, the drawer fronts inlaid with tulips, vines, sunburst encircling "E. Miles", carved base, blocked "French" feet with applied speared carving, height 44 3/4 in., width 43 5/8 in., depth 17 in.
PLEASE NOTE: The Christian symbols on this chest indicate the maker was informed by an "American" Calvinist theology: the upward pointing finger, a reminder of heavenly destiny; the hearts are the seat of conscience and companion to the soul; the sunburst, the heavenly father which shines on the vines, referencing the tree of life. The spectacles adjacent to the owner's name, "E. Miles" perhaps reference a holy vision or "seeing the light".
