An American Labeled Late Classical Mahogany Games Table, c. 1829-1835 New York, bearing paper label MEEKS & SONS MANUFACTORY-OF-CABINET FURNITURE- JOSEPH MEEKS & SONS- Nos. 43 & 45 BROAD STREET-NEW YORK, New York, the fold-over top with rounded corners above a finely veneered and banded apron, raised on a flared pedestal connected to a raised plinth with scrolled legs fitted with casters, height 28 3-8 in., width 36 in., depth 35.5in. E1500-2500 Provenance: High Museum, Atlanta; Virginia Carroll Crawford Coll. Note: See Art & Enterprise, p. 28, pl. 8. Reference: A variety of Meeks furniture is found in Voorsanger and Howat, Art and the Empire City. The well-known Meeks broadside of 1833, often illustrated in American furniture texts, indicates a nearly identical example numbered 34 in the 7th row and 2nd column (see p. 517 in the aforementioned text.)
