An American Late Classical Carved Mahogany Tester Bedstead, c. 1820, Southern, having a molded tester, turned posts ending in brass ball feet, paneled headboard with scrolled crest terminating in bosses, shaped low footboard and conforming straight rails, height 92 in., width 59 in., length 72 in. E5000-7000 Provenance: Governor Jacques Philippe Roi de Villere (1761-1830), by descent to present owner. An iconic figure in Louisiana history, plantation-born Villere served as a page in the court of Louis XVI, was on the staff of Pierre Clement Laussat during Louisiana's transition from French to American control in 1803, and served as Louisiana's first native-born governor from 1816 to 1820. Villere served with distinction as major general of the Louisiana Militia in the Battle of New Orleans, which was fought partially on his Conseil Plantation below New Orleans.
