Lot 474
An American Late Classical Carved Mahogany Meridienne, c. 1835-1845, attributed to Duncan Phyfe and Son, New York, the serpentine backrail with fan and twin boss crest, s-scroll arms, molded seat rail, plinth legs and reeded feet on casters, height 37 in., width 78 in., depth 26 in. Provenance: Sorrel-Weed House, Savannah, Georgia. Remarkably, this house, centrally located on Savannah's Madison Square, hosted both Generals Robert E. Lee and William Tecumseh Sherman within a three-year span. Note: The placement and proportion of the boss terminals on the scroll arms of this lot are nearly identical to those on a meridienne attributed to Phyfe descended in the family of Samuel Foot and now conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A sofa also attributed to Phyfe and Son with a similar fan and twin boss crest to that on this meridienne was offered in these rooms as lot 659 on May 20, 2006.
