An American Late Classical Mahogany Armoire, c. 1835, in the manner of Dutreuil Barjon, New Orleans, bold flared molded cornice above a pair of molded, panelled doors, on stepped ogee bracket foot base, height 96 in., width 58 in., depth 22 in. E4500/5500 Note: Dutreuil Barjon, Sr.'s furniture is described by W. A. Feuillan, Jr. as "made of mahogany, which came from St. Domingue, and of wild cherry, a native Louisiana wood,... well-proportioned and substantially made. His designs were simple, in good taste..." Dutreuil Barjon, Jr. learned the trade from his father who maintained a shop on St. Ann from about 1820, and by 1823, on Royal Street. In 1868, two years prior to the son's death, the shop on Royal Street was closed. A related full-size armoire, part of a suite passed down through the Soniat du Fossat-Fortiers of Tchoupitoulas Plantation, stencilled withthe mark of Dutreuil Barjon, Jr. sold in their galleries, March 2nd, 1996, lot 425.
