An American Metamorphic Reading Table, late 19th c., Clowes and Gates Worcester, Massachusetts, the rectangular molded top with double ledge containing an inset writing surface above a set of two drawers with adjustable iron sliding top, height shaft and swivel latch, the shaft with crimson ground and gilt painted with ivy leaves, palm fronds, lilies of the valley and a vase, on hinged, arched paw feet with bracket supports, on casters, height 41.5in., width 32 in., depth 23.5in., the drawers bear manufacturers' labels, pasted into bottom at left and right, the latter reading 'The Clowes & Gates Mfg., Co. Sole Mfrs. of the George W. Gates rotary, adjustable, sliding top, folding table. Worchest 484 / Geo. H. Clowes & Geo. W. Gates / Medals awarded to Geo. W. Gates - Best Adjustable Table, Worchester, Mass 1879 & from New England Agricultural Society, 1880.'
