Description:

An American Modern Gothic Brass-Mounted, Incised Cherrywood Library Globe on Stand, c. 1874-1876, cartouche reads "Andrews'/ 18 Inch/ Terrestrial Globe / Chicago;/ A.H. Andrews & Co", full meridian marked with degrees, incorporating unusual secondary ring allowing adjustment of inclination; the stand with papered horizon band showing months and houses of the zodiac; supported by three hemispherical stiles on columnar supports, trestle base with stretchers centered by a compass, canted legs, block terminals, brass claw and ball casters, height 46 in., diameter 43 in.

  • Notes: Note: Founded in 1865, A.H. Andrews and Company produced furniture and maps for churches and schools until the early 1870s, when it ventured into the production of high end "art" furniture as well as a line of globes in 1873 This lot is the product of both ventures. More ambitious in materials and design than globes made for institutional clients, this globe was intended for installation in a high style interior. It was more likely the product of a commission from one of three well known Chicago architects working in the Gothic mode: Peter Bonnett Wight (1838-1925), William Le Baron Jenny (1832-1907) or Albert Fehmer (1849-1925). Wight, Jenny and Fehmer all advertised in the company's 1876 catalog, Guide to Church Furnishings and Decoration. The Andrews firm not only moved into a Wight design building in 1872, but also executed the furniture design by Wight for Ulmenheim, the home of Chicago's Blatchford family. Fehmer's design for a sideboard submitted to the 1875 Chicago Interstate Industrial Exhibition was produced by Andrews & Co., as well.
