Description:
An American Modern Gothic Walnut and Minton Tile Hanging Cabinet, c. 1875, attributed to Kimbel and Cabus, New York, with notched pediment, crenellated gallery, each door ornamented with brass strapwork hinges, wooden pegs and centered by a Minton tile by John Moyr Smith depicting "Alfred" and "Edy. and Elgiua" from the English history series, c. 1872, the sides with reeded panels, height 29 3/4 in., width 25 1/2 in., depth 8 3/4 in.
- Notes: Note: John Moyr Smith (1839-1912) produced numerous tile designs for Minton tile works, and was favored exclusively by New York's Kimbel and Cabus. Educated at the Glasgow School of Art, along with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Christopher Dresser, the latter of whom employed Smith at his London studio. The cabinet's overall design relates to the early work of William Bourgess, Philip Webb, and William Morris' creative circle that drew inspiration from medieval history, architecture and decorative arts.
