Description:

An American Nco-Grec Carved and Gilt- Incised Walnut Firescreen Frame, c. 1870, New York, attributed to Herter Bros., the Egyptianesque center crest flanked by profile carved helmeted lions, overall height 54.5in., inset 28.75in. x 35in. E1000-1500 Note: This screen is related in overall form to the gilded example illustrated on pg. 186 of Howe, Frelinghuysen, Voorsanger et al, Herter Brothers, Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age and has a nearly identical pendant finial. The lion's head carved at the stiles also relates to those found on the illustrated screen, both having elongated open jaws with ribs carved inside. These two screens appear to be the only known examples of this form attributable to Herter Brothers.
