E5000-7000 Note: The design of lot 290 indicates a cabinetmaker with a sophisticated understanding of Neo-Grec and other historical motifs that is modified to create a unified overall composition. The fine construction of this cabinet in cherry, rosewood birdseye maple and exotic wood inlays are also indicative of a top tier New York maker perhaps Alexander Roux, whose known ouvre demonstrates a virtuoso understanding of variations in Renaissance style. An important New York cabinet with a blocked base, incised gilt leafing vine decoration, and ribboned musical trophee panels similar to those in lot 290 is in the collection of the Munson-Williams- Proctor Institute.
