Description:

An American Renaissance Carved Rosewood Center Table, late 19th c., attributed to John Jelliff, Newark, New Jersey, having original inset white marble top with rounded ends and molded edge, the skirt with incised decoration and carved female busts, buttress supports, large turned and central stem, X-form stretchers terminating in anthemion-carved busts of classical female heads, casters, height 31 in., width 42 in., depth 31 in. Note: This lot, with distinctive carved busts on the base, is nearly identical to a rosewood table made by Jelliff & Co. for a suite of furniture for the Fredrick Tuttle House at 2022 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, now conserved by the Newark Museum (see Dietz, A Century of Revivals, p. 49, pl. 41). The table here exhibits robust Renaissance-style carved surrounds for the skirt busts, emphasizing the overall design. An identical table sold as lot 526 April 4, 1998, and two tables attributed to Jelliff also identical to this example sold as lots 516 and 517 on Dec. 1, 2007.
