Description:

An American Renaissance Carved Walnut, Burled Walnut and Bronze-Mounted Sofa, late 19th c., attributed to John Jelliff, Newark, N.J., the triple back with arched crest centered with a plaque depicting a profile of a Roman soldier, finialed stiles, the back containing half-round carved urns topped by swags, the arms terminating in busts of Renaissance women, shaped incised seat rail on turned legs with casters. Note: A walnut sofa attributed to Jelliff nearly identical to lot 946 was sold in Neal Auction Company salesrooms as lot 627, on July 15, 1995.
