Description:

An American Renaissance Inlaid and Ebonized Rosewood Parlor Cabinet, c. 1870, attributed to Pottier and Stymus, New York, or Thomas Godey, Baltimore, sarcophagus top, center door with bronze plaque, opening to a satinwood and ebonized interior, incurvate sides with inlaid panels, conforming plinth, height 44 in., width 55 in., depth 18 in.

  • Notes: Note: A cabinet de-accessioned from the High Museum of Art and bearing Thomas Godey's label, with nearly identical proportions, carved stiles and panel frames to those on this lot, was sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 516 on February 19, 2005. Interestingly, another cabinet commissioned from New York firm Pottier and Stymus, in the Gov. Henry Lippitt House Museum (Rhode Island), also has the proportions, stiles and panel frames identical to this lot and the Godey cabinet mentioned above.
