An American Renaissance Inlaid, Parcel Gilt and Ebonized Double Portfolio Stand, c. 1870-1875, Kilian Brothers, New York, the shaped frame with incising and gilt palmettes, bosses and decorative carved elements, the tiered portfolio holders with colorful inlaid reserves, on splayed legs connected by a turned stretcher, height 49 in., width 23 in., depth 22 in. E1500-2500 Note: Kilian Brothers competed with large New York cabinet makers like Pottier and Stymus and Herter Brothers by creating stylish Neo-Grec accent furnishings such as pedestals, side tables, reception chairs, easels, and music or folio stands. Designs generally employed a juxtapostion of machine-made walnut and ebonized structural elements with incised gilt decoration and black ground inlaid panels. Two Kilian side tables, one conserved by the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, the other with Prudent Mallard's (New Orleans) retailer's label from the collection of H. L. Dufour have marquetry panels, surface decoration and leg terminals very similar to those in lot 275.
