An American Renaissance Inlaid Rosewood Sofa, c. 1860, N.Y., in the manner of Gustav Herter, the shaped triple back with an acanthus carved crest centered by a circular disc inlaid with a neo-classical urn and surrounded by leafy branches, padded and foliate inlaid crest rail, the slightly round padded arms terminating in pendants and with inlaid scrolled uprights, the conforming seat rail with turned center legs and scrolled paw feet at the sides, height 44 in., width 75 in., depth 20.5in. E3500-4500 Note: The bold and refined carving, the vocabulary of the inlay, and design elements such as pendants and cartouches on this sofa, lot 556, all relate to furniture attributed to Gustave Herter. A signed sidechair now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago and an attributed console mirror in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art each feature comparable use of carving and inlay.
