Lot 422
An American Renaissance Marquetry, Ebonized and Gilt Bronze-Mounted Library Table, mid-19th Century possibly J. Zeigler & Co., New York, the top with demilune ends and exotic wood inlays of nesting birds, the shaped apron having a drawer fitted with an elaborate bookstand, the shaped and fluted legs joined by incurvate X stretcher, casters below, height 31 in., width 53 in., depth 311-2 in. E6000-9000 Note: A rival of New York makers such as Pottier & Stymus, Kimbal & Cabus and Herter Brothers, J. Zeigler & Co. operated from about 1865 to 1872 out of a three story brick building at 42 Bleeker Street in New York, the principals listed as Jacob Zeigler and C. Glinsmann. William Baumgarten (1845-1908) of J. Zeigler & Co. was hired by rival Christian Herter as a general manager at Herter Brothers in 1869, which indicates a relationship of Zeigler & Co. and larger high end firms.
