Lot 488
Description:
An American Renaissance Marquetry, Parquetry, Burled Walnut, Gilt-Incised and Ebonized Rosewood Center Table, late 19th c., New York, the D end top having diamond parquetry and tinted floral marquetry spray, scrolling vines and acanthus banding in contrasting woods, ebonized molded edge, the conforming paneled skirt with volute acanthus scrolls and ebonized brackets, incised, lotus carved legs connected by incurvate stretchers centered by an urn, ending in toupie feet, height 30 in., width 55 in., depth 29 1/2 in.
- Notes: Note: The shaped and inlaid top, conforming apron, trumpet legs in the Louis XIV taste, and distinctive urn-centered stretchers on this table are very similar to those on two important tables attributed to Pottier and Stymus, New York, offered by Neal Auction Company: one as lot 281 on February 3, 2007 and the other as lot 559 on April 4, 1991 The use of an elaborate pierced stretcher, and the juxtaposition of gilt, ebonized and exotic wood elements can also be seen in a high-style Egyptian Revival rosewood table by Pottier and Stymus conserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A Neo-Grec table attributed to Pottier and Stymus from the Lyndhurst Corporation Collection also employs an elaborate stretcher and legs in the manner of those in this lot.
