An American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood and Walnut Library Armchair, mid-19th c., attributed to John Henry Belter, New York, padded crest, horseshoe shaped back with entwined dolphins, the continuous arms terminating in lion's masks, serpentine foliate seat rail, cabriole legs ending in paw feet with casters, height 34 in.
- Notes: Note: Though this lot is clearly an example from the Belter firm, library armchairs of this form were produced by a number of high-style American makers. A dining chair attributed to Belter with a back of similar form to this lot is illustrated in Dubrow, American Furniture of the 19th c., p. 206 A library armchair of similar inspiration and related to that in the library of William Vanderbilt was sold in these rooms as lot 359, July 12, 2008 Reference: A photo of William Vanderbilt seated in the armchair mentioned above appears in Howe, et. al.
