Description:

An American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Sofa, mid-19th c., attributed to J. and J. W. Meeks, New York, in the pattern known as Henry Ford, anthemion crest issuing a foliate carved rail over reticulated grape and acanthus carving, continuous arms, serpentine seat, cabriole legs, casters, height 49 in., width 60 in., depth 23 in.

  • Notes: Note: As an automotive pioneer whose life was dedicated to industrial innovations, Henry Ford (1863-1947) amassed a collection of tens of thousands of objects from everyday life documenting American technological advances. The use of laminated layers to strengthen the lightweight and heavily pierced forms of Meeks parlor furniture surely appealed to Ford's interests. The pattern of the sofa featured here is named for the presence of a similar sofa in Ford's collection.
