An American Rococo Carved Mahogany Bedstead, 19th c., by Charles Lee, Manchester, Massachusetts, stamped "C. Lee 2484", deep molded and flaring tester, the cluster column posts supporting a paneled headboard with shell crest and pendant fruit and foliage, height 112in., width 85in., depth 73in. E10000/15000 Note: The origin of bedsteads found in Louisiana and bearing the stamp of Charles Lee has long been cause for speculation. The most persistent popular belief has been that Lee was a free man of color who apprenticed under Prudent Mallard. It is now known that Lee w as in fact working in Manchester, Massachusetts c. 1856-1868, employing approximately eighteen men and shipping his bedsteads to New Orleans retailers such as William and James Mccracken and Calvin Chandler Sampson.
