Description:

An American Rococo Carved Mahogany Tester Bedstead, mid-19th c., stamped "C. Lee" on rails, the stepped flared ogee tester supported on tapering faceted posts, scroll and foliate-carved headboard, scalloped and foliate-carved rails, height 106 in., width 85 in. E5000/7000 Note: "For many years mystery surrounded the incised stamp reading "C. Lee" seen on a large number of beds throughout the South. Many myths circulated, the most widespread one being that Charles Lee was a free man of color who had worked under Prudent Mallard. The truth, however, was that Lee operated his own bedstead shop in Manchester, Massachusetts in the mid 1800's and was one of a number offurniture makers that shipped their goods South. The largest concentration of his beds remain in Louisiana and Mississippi, in manyimportant homes and collections."
