Description:

An American Rococo Carved Rosewood Encoignure, mid-19th c., New York, probably J.H. Belter, original white marble top, foliate carved apron, mirrored back, molded stiles, marble shelf, serpentine foliate and floral carved apron, cabriole legs, scroll toes, height 32 1/2 in., width 22 1/2 in., depth 16 in.

  • Provenance: Provenance : This cabinet has a history of ownership in Charleston, S.C. There is an old pencil inscription "JD Aiken, 1848" underside of lower marble. Also "No.2" old ink script is found on the case and both white marbles. Note: The encoignure form is rare within American Rococo furniture. This example is assuredly New York and is particularly reminiscent of the cabinetry of John Henry Belter. The usage of lightly veined white marble, elegant carving within a clear finely veneered rosewood frieze, distinctive molding and the carved short cabriole legs are certainly in the manner of Belter.
