Lot 470
An American Rococo Carved Rosewood Étagère Cabinet, c. 1850-1860, attributed to John Henry Belter, New York, elaborate reticulated arched crest with high relief grapes and flowers, the mirrored back flanked by shelves supported on grape-carved scrolled brackets, original serpentine white marble top over mirrored doors, flanked by serpentine shelves on baluster supports, foliate carved base with disc feet, height 98 in., width 59 in., depth 16 1/2 in. Note: The mirror shape and the scroll and grapevine crest on lot 468 are unmistakably attributable to the Belter firm and nearly identical to those on a "Rosalie" rosewood étagère attributed to Belter from the Service Collection. The shape of the lower cabinet, with fluted ovolo corners on the frieze, finger molded stiles with scroll terminals flanking a bifurcated center cabinet and a plinth with conforming ovolo corners is very similar to those on a rosewood étagère attributed to J.H. Belter in the Bayou Bend Collection, Houston.
