Description:

An American Rococo Carved Rosewood Étagère, mid-19th c., Philadelphia, scrolled acanthus crest, shaped mirror plates, two demilune shelves and small center shelf, the serpentine base with violet brocatelle marble top, foliate skirt, two conforming shelves, cabochon carved scrolled legs, casters, height 76 1/2 in., width 53 in., depth 20 in.
Note: The proportions, use of violet brocatelle marble for the top, and the robust carved decoration of this étagère are indicative of a Philadelphia firm working in the Rococo mode such as Klauder and Deginther (active after 1847) or Gottlieb Vollmer (active c. 1859). Two Philadelphia center tables with related carvings and marbles were sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 556, October 26, 1992 and lot 163, June 27, 2009.
