An American Rococo Highly Carved Mahogany Two-Piece Bedroom Suite, dated 1866, Philadelphia, with maker's notations, pierced armorial crest of Georgian inspiration, centered with a bust of Shakespeare, arched headboard, conforming foot board, bracketed rails; bowfront dressing chest surmounted by crest, mirror, original marble top, three drawers, molded base; note top of chest inked, "D&C No...18...", the dresser crest penciled "1866, John.....Maker"; bed height 98 in., length 79 in., width 59 7/8 in.; dresser height 96 in., width 46 7/8 in., depth 25 in.
PLEASE NOTE: An important Philadelphia "Centennial" carved walnut bookcase crested with figures similar to those seen on this bed and dresser was sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 739, on May 22, 1993.
