Description:

An American Rosewood and Walnut Inlaid Pedestal, c. 1870, New York, attributed to Herter Bros., shaped top probably accommodating a marble, the center urn support flanked by distinctive lion carved monopods with inlaid butterflies, minor losses to the fluted architectonic feet, height 41in. E1500-2000 Note: This example employs highly detailed marquetry inlay in an anthemion motif of the sort, preferred by the Herter Brothers firm. The carved lion's heads relate to those found on documented Herter pieces. See Howe, Frelinghuysen, Voorsanger et al, Herter Brothers Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age, pgs. 218 and 221
