Description:

An American Terracotta Figure of a Recumbent Sheltie, mid-to-late 19th c., inscribed "J.W. Fiske, Chambers St, NY" at front of base, the elegantly reclining dog grasping a bumblebee between his paws, height 15 1/2 in., width 30 in., depth 11 1/2 in.

  • Notes: Note: By the middle of the 19th c., figures of dogs were favored garden ornaments in the United States. J.W. Fiske, a prolific and prosperous maker of cast iron and zinc objects from 1858-1933, maintained a particular focus on high quality figures (such as the lot here), leading most New York City directories to refer to the business as a "Statuary." The Chambers Street address on this figure was the location of the Fiske Foundry from 1870-1874. Reference: Israel. Antique Garden Ornament, Two Centuries of American Taste. pp. 148 and 219.
