Description:

An American Turned and Carved Walnut Sidechair, c. 1875-1885, attributed to Hunzinger, N.Y., the canted stiles supporting spherules joined by a splat containing opposing Js, with incised ring turning, the upholstered seat raised on conforming legs joined by stretchers, height 32in. E250-350 Note: George Hunzinger (1835-1898) left a mark on American Innovative and Patented furniture that has been rarely seen. His designs and improvements include tables, beds, chairs and rockers, as well as metamorphic furniture. The use of spherules, J and U shapes and channeled turneings are repetitively used on many of his forms and combine a sense of novelty with geometric composition. A related example is illustrated in The Furniture of George Hunzinger: Invention and Innovation in the Nineteenth-Century America, by Barry Harwood, figure 52.
