Description:

An American Wirework and Zinc Parlor Fountain, late 19th c., flared wirework rim, raised platform with tubing, the stem with water reservoir, on scrolled legs, height 37 in., width 27 in.

  • Notes: Note: A fountain very similar to this lot is illustrated in Knights' American Mechanical Dictionary Boston: Houghton, Osgood & Co., 1880, p. 910, showing the principle of the fountain's hydrostatic operation based on principles described by the ancient mathematician and engineer, Hero of Alexandria (c.10-70 AD). Patents for the manufacture of parlor fountains were held by Joseph Storer in England (1870) and James W. Tufts in the United States (1871). Reference: nbmog.org/ParlorFontPage.html and Spillman.
