Lot 90
An Anglo-Colonial Carved Ebony Armchair, early-to-mid 19th c., probably Galle District, Ceylon, arched foliate crest, continuous caned back and seat, scrolled arms and seat rail with applied rosettes, shell-carved legs, paw feet, casters Note: A similar pair of carved ebony armchairs, also associated with the Galle District in Ceylon, sold Christie's New York April 2011 as lot 732; another almost identical armchair sold Christie's London October 2009 as lot 29. Elaborately carved chairs produced in the Galle District of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) were influenced by English designs of the early 19th century and continued to be made over a long period of time. This type of chair, produced in exotic ebony, was fairly common in the mid-19th century. Amin Jaffer's Furniture from British India and Ceylon notes the 1850 published account of H.C. Sirr in Colombo as "the most exquisitely carved ebony furniture conceivable".
