An Antique Continental Silver Standing Cup and Cover in the Renaissance Manner of the late 16th/early 17th c., Lubeck, Germany, bearing the Hapsburg double-headed eagle mark of Lubeck, struck twiceon the upper surface of the foot, (see Rosenberg figs. for 16th, 17thand 18th c.) The tall standing cup having a deep spool-shaped bowl with a shell-chased lobed bottom resting on a stem with a central bracketed vase shaped knop decorated with caryatids alternating with gryphons, above a high circular base with a spreading foot, the domed cover rises to an openwork gryphon bracketed finial surmounted by a standing knight holding a shield and brandishing a sword. Encircling the cover is an embossed panel of fruit, grotesque masks, half figures and seated figures, birds, f flowers and strapwork. The cup body has two embossed ovals with Classical figures and two framedcartouches, the four ovals alternating with panels of scrolls, masks and fruit. Embossed scrolls, scrolls with fruit, fruit with strapworkand vertical flutes also form borders on cover, body, stem and foot, height 18.5in., weight 38oz ., 9 dwts.
