An Antique French Automaton Doll of the Marquis de Lafayette, late 19th c., attributed to Jumeau, painted porcelain head with glass eyes and earrings, his costume made of silk and lace, with applied embroidered foliate embellishments, brass buttons and an enameled heart-formed collar clasp, the key-wind mechanism setting the pipe-holding right arm in motion, the head nodding, and the left hand, holding a gilt-metal lorgnette, to raise up to his eyes, raised on a velvet brocade covered wooden base, with raised mirrored plateau, glass dome, doll height 21 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Provenance: The automaton was in the collection of the Doll House Museum, Blackstone, VA, owned by Margaret Mills Armbruster. It was described in a magazine article as "the mechanical ŒLafayette¹ doll created by the famed Jumeau company."
