Lot 547
An Antique Renaissance-Style Lead Figure of a Young Gentleman in Fanciful Dress with Basket of Fruit, possibly 18th c., height 36 in., width 25 in., depth 13 in.
Note: A combination of the Industrial Revolution and the Grand Tour began a shift in the production of figures of antiquity. John Cheere (English, 1709-1787) became a force in the production of lead garden figures, at one point filling an order for 98 of these sculptures for the Portuguese minister for the royal palace of Queluz.
