An Aubusson Carpet, c. 1860, the aubergine field around a large central cartouche containing a rose bouquet in red and pink hues, on an ivory ground with a golden, green and faded turquoise scrollwork border, all contained within an intertwined scrollwork frame applied with scattered red rose garlands, the spandrels having polychromed floral bouquets issuing from shell motifs, 18 ft. 10 in. x 16 ft. 10 in. E25000/35000 Provenance: Fairvue Mansion, Gallatin, Tennessee. Note: As part of the decoration in Fairvue's music room, this carpet was acquired in France by William and Ellen Wemyss during their extensive restoration efforts for Fairvue during the 1930's. Mr. and Mrs. Wemyss were active in a variety of preservation projects in Tennessee, and Fairvue was inhabited by the Wemyss family longer than any of the mansion's previous owners. Built in 1832 by Issac Franklin, the house was the jewel of a two thousand acre plantation in the bluegrass region of middle Tennessee. In 1882 the estate was purchased from Franklin's widow by Charles Reed, who used the land as a stock farm for race horses. Fairvue was associated with horse racing until 1934 when purchased by the Wemyss family.
