An English Cast Iron Wardian Case on Stand, registered design no. 211078, introduced 1893, finialed framework with inset glass panels on trestle supports; medial stretcher, height 45 3/4 in., width 31 in., depth 15 3/4 in Note: The Wardian case with invented in 1829 by Dr. Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, whose collection of ferns was being poisoned by London's pollution. They were quickly adopted by plant explorers who were prospecting the world for new plants. By mid-century handsome examples were found in stylish drawing rooms.
