Lot 365
An English Silvered Bronze Sculpture of "The Spirit of Ecstasy", 20th c., after Charles Robinson Sykes (English, 1875-1950), cast signature at base, on a circular stepped plinth, height 28 1/4 in., width 13 1/2 in., depth 17 in.
PLEASE NOTE: The prototype of this design was created by Sykes in 1911 for his friend John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu (Later Lord Montagu of Beaulieu) as an ornament for his Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. The model for the figure was Montagu's secretary and mistress Eleanor Velasco Thornton; since the relationship between the two was hidden from all but their closest friends, Sykes originally titled the work "The Whisper". Sykes referred to the figure as "A graceful little goddess, the Spirit of Ecstasy" and this later name proved the most popular. The figure has been included on all Rolls Royce cars since the late teens. In celebration of the 100 year anniversary of "The Spirit of Ecstasy", Rolls-Royce is including a Centenary statement etched into the bases of the ornaments of all 2011 models.
