Description:

An Equatorial African Carved Hardwood Panel depicting Birds, Animals and Plants, sculpted in high relief, 21in. x 23in. E200-300 Provenance: Descended in the family of a Southern lady who acquired the carving at Dr. Albert Schweitzer's mission hospital compound in Lambarene, Gabon Republic, while on a world tour. By family legend, the lady travelled on a small plane through a severe storm to visit the hospital compound, and Dr. Schweitzer was so flattered that he invited her to dine at his home. The mission hospital compound included patients' families who camped out in tents to be near their loved ones. Dr. Schweitzer believed that recovery was improved when surrounded by family. This plaque was carved at the camp.
