Lot 200
An Exceptionally Fine French Faïence Corbeille with a Magisterial Painting of an Iris, 1760s, Strasbourg, with underglaze blue mark of Joseph Hannong, numbered "873" in blue, over "74" in underglaze brown, height 3 in., length 13 in., width 9 3/4 in. Note: The style and palette of the splendid painting of this iris offer close parallels to the work of Christian Whilhelm von Lowenfinck (fl. 1734-1760s: Grand Livre de la Faïence Française, Fribourg, 1986, p. 167, color pl. 207), as well as to that of his famous brother Adam Friedrich (fl. 1725-1760s), and the Strasbourg painters directly influenced by their importation of Meissen styles (ibid., p. 175, color pl. 217). A very similar treatment of the reticulated border, with rosettes at the intersection of each bar, and similar three-dimensional leaves at the edge (as on these handles) appears on a related plate: M.L. Solon, Old French Faïence (London, 1903), color pl. 21.
