An Important American Classical Mahogany Pier Table of Impressive Proportions, c. 1825-1830, Philadelphia, school of Anthony Gabriel Quervelle, the later rectangular white marble top above a torus molded frieze, the mirrored back flanked by split and engaged columns, the vigorously carved monopodia supports ornamented by mythological beast heads resting on volutes, the scrolls decorated with grape vines and acanthus, the paw feet raised on a bolection molded plinth, the shelf centered by a recessed oval marble of a later date, the whole terminating on claw feet distinguished by broad knuckled toes collared by gadrooning, height 43.5in., width 46 in., depth 21 in. E6000/8000 Note: Scrolled monopodia supports with grapevines embellishing the sides were a predominant design used by Quervelle in his pier tables. An added feature to these supports was typically a bird's head or other creature carved in a fanciful manner. A pier table incorporating marble within the shelf is illustrated in an article by Robert Trump in The Magazine Antiques, May 1989, page 1223, plate XIII. For related examples see The Magazine Antiques, May 1973, pages 983-984, fig. 4, 6 7 and plate I, one of a series of articles published by the late Dr. Robert C. Smith.
