Lot 267
An Important American Gothic Rosewood Center Table, c. 1840-50, New York, attributed to J. & J.W. Meeks, New York, the white marble oval inset top bordered by gadroon molding, the frieze banded with ribbon molding, the bold spiral turned supports raised on a shaped plinth joined by trefoil outlined feet displaying quatrefoil, height 29 in., width 45 in., depth 32 in. E5000/7500 Note: The carved trefoil foot of this table bears strong resemblance to a group of Gothic center tables thought to have been designed by A.J. Davis based on an illustration he published in 1844. See Art & Enterprise, The Virginia Crawford Collection, plate 30. The overall interplay of various motifs here is most reminiscent of furniture attributable to the firm of John and Joseph W. Meeks. Certainly, the gadrooned carved frieze balanced with lower wavy beading and the usage of turned supports on an incurvate Restauration inspired base are often found on documented Meeks furniture.
