An Important American Renaissance Carved and Ebonized Walnut Bedroom Suite, late 19th c., atributed to Allen & Bro., Philadelphia, comprising two mirror-backed dressing chests and a monumental bedstead; the bedstead with fan crest above an arched cornice, paneled frieze with bronzed roundel of Demeter surrounded by garlands, paneled headboard, fan-carved corners, conforming footboard and rails; dresser height 119 in., width 49 in., depth 23 in. and height 118 in., width 60 1/2 in., depth 20 in.; bedstead height 113 in., length 80 1/2 in., width 62 1/2 in.
- Notes: Note: The bold geometric juxtaposition of ebonization and robustly carved and burled panels on this suite is indicative of work attributed to Allen and Brother, including a center table from the Judith Hollander collection, seat furniture in the Berke collection and an Allen cabinet sold in these rooms as lot 109, October 11, 2008. William Allen Sr., a purveyor of exotic woods and furniture, was succeeded by sons, William Jr. and Joseph in the Allen workshop at 137 Walnut Street, Philadelphia in 1847. By 1869 Joseph partnered with another Allen brother, James, and Allen and Brother had solidified a reputation for fine goods and custom cabinetwork. James Allen closed the firm in 1902.
