An Important American Renaissance Extensively Inlaid and Gilt-Incised Rosewood Parlor Cabinet, c. 1865, attributed to Herter Brothers, New York, the blocked and scrolled backsplash centered with an inlaid roundel of a moth surrounded by incised leaves, the terminals in the form of lion's paws, the pedimented center section with baize inset top, Greek key frieze, canted gilt anthemion incised deep molding above a small paneled inlaid drawer, the architectonic door centered with a relief carved figure of Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest, depicted here with a sheaf of wheat and holding a sickle. The side cabinets with inlaid panel doors with Classical urns of flowers, small drawers above and below, each section flanked by stop fluted, scrolled acanthus carved stiles, raised on a blocked base with conforming feet, height 59 in., width 67 in., depth 22 in. - Notes: Note: Many elements of this cabinet relate to work known from the Herter firm. The marquetry panels on the two side cabinets are identical to those on a signed rosewood cabinet in the collection of J. Garfield DeMarco and on a cabinet attributed to Herter Brothers sold in these rooms as lot 636 on October 2, 1989 (1) The u-form pulls are identical to those on a rosewood cabinet attributed to Herter Bros. conserved by the Los Angeles Co. Museum of Art. (2) A stamped Herter Brothers cabinet in the collection of Ian Berke has a blocked center drawer above and proportions nearly identical to those on this lot. (3) The inclusion of a marquetry moth (a favored Aesthetic motif) in the crest of this cabinet is indicative of a sophisticated program of design.
