An Important American Renaissance Walnut and Burl Walnut Bedstead, late 19th c., labeled Pottier and Stymus, 375 Lexington Avenue, New York, the architectonic headboard centered by a large porcelain roundel painted with a female personification of Sleep with attendant sprite, flanked by gilt bronze terms, with bracketed rails; incurvate footboard with a porcelain plaque painted with the figure of Hypnos ( Sleep) and a fellow slumberer, both drowsy with the poppies they bear; rosewood banding, incised gilt decoration overall, height 85 in., width 57 « in., length 79 in. E12000-18000 Note: A premier New York cabinet making firm, Pottier and Stymus was known for high-style furniture in the Neo-Grec, Renaissance Revival, Egyptian Revival and Modern Gothic styles. With beginnings in the 1840's, the firm moved to the 375 Lexington Street address between 41st and 42nd Streets in 1871 Interestingly, this labeled bed, by virtue of the large round porcelain plaque flanked by finely cast bronze busts echoes both in design and ornament a highly important cabinet sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 742, May 22, 1993. An inscribed and numbered Pottier and Stymus rosewood bronze mounted armchair with bronze busts inscribed P & S similar to those on lot 280 above was offered by Neal Auction Company as lot 633, February 13, 1993.
