Description:
An Important American Rococo Carved Rosewood Half-Tester Bed, c. 1850, New Orleans, the molded arched tester top with acanthine crest centered by an urn, beaded finials; cluster posts with foliate capitals; shaped paneled headboard with large urn crest; foot posts with finialed mosquito bars; serpentine rails and foot carved with scrolled and fruiting appliqué; spreading quatrefoil feet, height 126 in., interior length 85 in., interior width 67 in., exterior length 94 1/2 in., exterior width 76 in.
- Provenance: Provenance: A White Castle, Louisiana Plantation to a private collection in 1985 ~ Note: In form, proportion and carved decoration, this magnificent bed relates to the famous carved rosewood bed from Prudent Mallard (Sevres/New Orleans 1809-1879) at Lansdowne in Natchez, Mississippi. The tester frame, posts, headboard and rails of this lot and the bed at Lansdowne are virtually identical. The bed featured here displays intact a heretofore-unknown complete sophistication in ornament. The bed at Lansdowne has a cabochon cartouche on the tester crest and lacks finials, while the tester of this lot has an elaborate urn of flowers (echoing the urn on the headboard) and retains finials over a robustly beaded tester molding. Also, the crest of the headboard on this lot has an urn of larger scale and retains more fulsome scrolls than that at Lansdowne. As at Lansdowne, this bed is a monumental piece of furniture intended for a grand setting, and is a singular document from the oeuvre of New Orleans most notable purveyor of furniture. Reference: The Lansdowne bed is illustrated in Otto, American Furniture of the 19th Century, pl. 289
