Lot 896
Description:
An Important American Rococo Carved Rosewood Bedstead, mid-19th c., New Orleans, the foliate crest centered by a flower urn, lobed and arched paneled headboard, melon finials on reduced cluster posts, shaped rails and foot with baldachin finials housing mosquito bars, quatrefoil feet, casters, height 71 1/2 in., inside length 84 in., inside width 65 3/4 in., en suite.
- Notes: Note: The paneled headboard crested by a flower filled urn, cluster posts, and shaped rails of this bed relates closely to the well-known rosewood bed from Prudent Mallard at Lansdowne, Natchez. This lot shows variation in the carved decoration, headboard shape, and post forms from the Lansdowne prototype, the overall effect is clear; this bed was intended as a centerpiece in an important house.
