An Important Archive of William Miller Owen and Sword, comprising: autograph letter signed, four pages, on "War Department, Publication Office, War Records 1861-65" letterhead, from Marcus J. Wright, as agent for the collection of Confederate Records, with original envelope addressed to "Genl. Wm. Miller Owen, Beauvoir, Mississippi", dated July 24 and 25th, 1890, thanking Owen for sending "your papers" that were copied "by my wife" and including a list of documents sent back to Owen - the documents as follows: • Partially printed document, dated "Richmond, August 7th, 1863, on C.S. A. letterhead, signed by James Seddon, Secretary of War, appointing W.M. Owen to Major of Artillery. • Order of Assignment, 1863, by Gen. Preston. • Special orders No. 298, on "Adjutant and Inspector General's Office" letterhead, dated "Richmond, Dec. 16th, 1863", signed by Withers, in part, "will proceed to Abingdam, S.W. Virginia and resume command of the Artillery ..." • Another Special order, as above dated Feb. 10, 1864, assigning Owen to join Gen. Longstreet. • Special order, dated from "Headquarters, Dept. E. Tenn, New Market, Feb. 16, 1864", assigning Owen temporary command of Gen. King's battalion, by order of General Longstreet. • General order, dated April 12, 1864, relieving Owen from command of Gen. King's battalion and assigning him duty with the Washington Artillery in Petersburg, VA, by command of Gen. Alexander. • Special order, March 9th, 1864, assigning Owen to duty with Col. J. Floyd King, by command of Gen. Longstreet. • Letter signed on "Confederate States, Head-quarters Department North Carolina and Southern Virginia" letterhead, dated May 15th, 1864, signed by Gen. Beauregard, announcing "the temporary organization of divisions of attack." • Special order, dated "Petersburg, July 31, 1864", assigning Owen to take command of Gibbs Battalion, by order of Gen. Pendleton. • Partially printed document on C.S.A. letterhead, dated March 1, 1865, appointing Owen to Lieutenant Colonel of Artillery, reporting for duty to Gen. R.E. Lee. • Speci al order, on "Head Quarters, Department Northern Virginia", letterhead dated March 20th, 1865, assigning Owen as field officer, by command of Gen. R.E. Lee. • Special order, dated April 10th, 1865, from Gen. R.E. Lee, at the request of Gen. Grant requesting all officers to return home. • Letter endorsed by Gen. R.E. Lee, dated from Appamatox, April 12th, 1865, from Latrobe, praising "by direction of" Longstreet to show his appreciation for Owen's distinguished service, en verso, endorsed "Approved and Concurred in / R.E. Lee" • Letter signed by Longstreet and with endorsed notes from R.E. Lee and Jefferson Davis; the letter dated from Lynchburg, May 15th, 1865, addressed to Owen at the "Spotswood Hotel, Richmond", praising his career, endorsed en verso, with a signed note by Lee and Davis. • Vintage circular of letter by R.E. Lee, dated Jan. 26, '66, congratulating Longstreet and Owen on their new venture. • ALS, on "Western Rail Road of Alabama" letterhead, dated June 4, 1876, by E.P. Alexander (General) as general manager of the railroad, one sheet, both sides, praising Owen's career. • ALS, from General Longstreet, dated June 28th, 1890, to W.M. Owen, three sheets, six sides, discussing various events during the Civil War, apparently in response to Owen's questions for his research • TOGETHER WITH the original painted tin box, faintly labeled Owen; AND ALSO WITH W.M. Owen's U.S. Model 1862, Staff and Field Officer's Sword, one of less than one thousand made by Springfield Armory, with "GCS" inspector's mark on ricasso, folding counterguard, sharkskin grip, blade lightly etched with laurels and U.S.
